Was the back up of my computer information viable…and safe?
Is my info as safe as I think? We all know that we should be backing up our computer information, but do we…regularly…really?
I thought my backup process was good; I would make copies of my folders and files on DVDs and CDs and had an external hard drive that I would copy over information onto…occasionally. Unfortunately, I didn’t do it as often as I should have. I would think about it but I didn’t actually do it. That was a costly mistake and one I will never forget.
During an office move, I accidentally dropped my computer box…on my foot. My immediate thought was that my foot broke the computer’s fall and all would be okay. In reality, it did little to protect the computer. The result was that my computer failed and had to be rebuilt. Thinking that I was safe with having a recent backup copy of My Documents folder (I made it just before the move…to be on the safe side), I installed all of the software then inserted my backup DVD disk only to find an empty My Documents folder. I scrambled to find my external hard drive and found that it contained an old backup…3 months old. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Believe me, I began to see the errors of my ways immediately. Live and learn…the hard way!
There must be a better way to backing up?!!? CARBONITE to the rescue!
That got me thinking there had to be a better way to backup my info without me actually having to think about backing up my info. This is where Carbonite came in. I read about it via a friend’s blog post and found out that once you install it on your computer, Carbonite automatically starts backing up your My Documents folder and files, along with others that you designate. This is a no-brainer in my book. For less than $55 a year, Carbonite will back up the most important files on your system automatically.
I purchased Carbonite and have been singing its praises ever since.
That catastrophe and resultant Carbonite purchase occurred some time ago. I think the unintentional drop aged both my foot and my computer, because neither have worked as intended since.
Recently, I had to purchase a new computer. After installing my software, I went to the Carbonite site and restored my folders and files. Everything was up-to-date, and I did not lose a thing. My Carbonite subscription is money well spent.
